Using this site
What this site is built to meet, what does not meet it yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
The standard we build to
This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard the U.S. Department of Justice set for state and local government websites under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. EDAC is a center of Morgan State University, a public institution, so that standard applies to what we publish here.
What we have done
- Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, and a link at the top of each page skips past the header straight to the content.
- Text meets the contrast the standard requires against the surfaces behind it.
- Headings run in order, so a screen reader can be used to move through a page by structure.
- Nothing on the site depends on JavaScript to be read. With scripts turned off, every word is still there.
- No audio plays anywhere on this site unless you start it. The film behind the heading on the home page is silent, and it has a button to stop it. It is not loaded at all on phones, or for anyone whose device asks for reduced motion.
What does not meet the standard yet
We would rather name these than let you find them.
- Our conference films do not yet have reviewed captions or audio description. Some carry automatic captions from YouTube, which are machine generated and not accurate enough to rely on. If you need a transcript or a described version of any film, ask and we will get it to you.
- The WOMEN impact report is not tagged for screen readers. It is a design file, linked from the calendar, and its reading order and images are not marked up. Ask and we will send you the same information in a format you can use.
- Pages we link to are outside our control. YouTube, Canva, Google Forms and our partners' sites each set their own accessibility. If one of them blocks you from something we sent you to, tell us and we will find another way to get it to you.
Tell us when something does not work
If any part of this site gets in your way, we want to hear about it, and you do not need to know why it happened or what to call it. Describe what you were trying to do and where it went wrong. That is enough.
It helps if you can include the address of the page, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse, such as a screen reader, magnification, or voice control. None of that is required.
We will reply, and where the problem is ours we will fix it. While a fix is in progress we will get you the information another way, by email, by phone, or in person.
The university's route
EDAC is a center of Morgan State University, and the university runs its own web accessibility office. You can write to it directly at webaccessibility@morgan.edu, and you do not have to come through us first. That is also the address the university names for complaints under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
